News & Events – Fabulous Fashion

8th April 2022

Today Fabulous Fashions went to the Dame Vera Lynn: An Extraordinary Life in Ditchling where Dame Vera  owned a home from 1944.  The exhibition showcases over 100 objects from the estate of the ‘Forces’ Sweetheart’, including numerous previously unseen personal items.

It chronicles the nine decades Dame Vera spent in the public eye, from her early days as a singer, to her wartime service in the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA), through to her extensive post-war entertainment career and charitable works.  Described by The Telegraph as the loveliest of shows, we saw the military shorts she wore when performing to the Allied troops on her tour of Burma in 1944, The Burma Star she was awarded in 1985 for her efforts alongside gold discs, photographs and 20 costumes from her incredible 90-year career.

Her wartime wedding suit and the cardboard cake from her marriage to Harry Lewis in 1941 were also on display.  A great day out in good company, lovely coffee, wine and lunch with our amazing chauffeur!  Here’s to our next 2 trips out in June!

Our group had a very successful visit to the Fashion and Textile Museum on Tuesday 2nd Nov.  So I’ve attached a few snaps.  The theme was Beautiful People: The Boutique in 1960s and was saw lots of fashions that jogged our memories of the 6os – Twiggy, the first Glastonbury, the time of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles plus Biba and much much more!

Our trip to the V&A went really well yesterday – even with the threat of terrible weather.  Eight of us ventured out and had a brilliant day.  We went to the “Kimono – Kyoto to Catwalk” Exhibition.  A couple of photos below.

This was the first day of Europe’s first major exhibition on the kimono.  It presented garments from the past (from 1660) and also as a dynamic and constantly evolving icon of fashion, with many modern designers take on it – including John Galliano!  See Galliano’s outfit in photos.
