28th November 2023

We were invited to play to the Care Centre at Brook Meadows House.  I’m not sure who had more fun, the audience or us.  Nine of us performed a range of popular songs from our repertoire and a few photos taken on the day are below.  You’ll see John playing the bugle when we we going full gusto with ‘When the Saints’ – at least Marion was in full swing, whilst Joe looks very laid back!  (Click on the picture to see a larger version.)

25th October 2023

Today we had an introduction to a new song “Don’t let her Down” – a song about Southend Pier written and originally performed by Jack Forbes.  It dates back to the early 80’s when Southend Pier was in danger of being abandoned and closed for ever.  Jack wrote the song as support for the successful campaign to keep the Pier going.  For those unable to make today’s meeting (and a reminder of how it goes to those present), a recording of the song follows:

One of our group members is sadly rather poorly at present so the group made a recording of two songs to cheer him up and send along our best wishes with them.   They can be heard on the links below:

You Are My Sunshine (harmonica by Joe) –

Singing the Blues (whistling intro and accompaniment by Mike D.) –

16th March 2023

During lockdown, Hadleigh and Leigh Estuary u3a’s joined together to continue to enjoy their ukulele playing over zoom sessions. Now many months later the two groups played together face to face after the group was invited by Hadleigh u3a to join them in their practise session at the Hadleigh Salvation Army hall, eight of our group were able to get along making a total of 3o ukulele’s players, 1 singer and 1 on the bongo drums all jammin’ together.  A fun session was enjoyed by everyone and we hope to have a repeat session at some future date.

February 2023

Boy was it cold at uke practise earlier today!  Let’s hope someone remembers to put a shilling in the meter before our next session. (Click on photo to see a larger version).

… and have you noticed how the youngsters are for ever on their phone!!

January 2023

The ukulele group was invited to play at the Estuary Club in Leigh to entertain a group of people belonging to a local care group.  We played several songs from our popular repertoire and the audience seemed to enjoy themselves and were singing along to some of the old songs they knew well.  The ukulele players certainly had fun with several laughs along the way.  Below is a photo from the day (click on photo to see a larger version):

and here is a video of us in full swing:

February 2022

A local bye election meant we could not use the usual hall at Iveagh Hall for a couple of our sessions, instead we were offered the use of an upstairs room over the bar.  Upon arrival for one session, no one had the key to the upstairs room, so we played to a small audience in the main bar area!  Here is a photograph of one member of the audience, Barry, who wanted to ‘join in’ with us; another is of us posing for a picture, and one caught unawares!

December 2019

The ukulele group entertained the Southend Silver Birch Care Group at St Luke’s on 12th December with a rousing Christmas show.  It gave us all a welcome break from election fever that day!  A few photos from the event are included below:

The Ukulele group, led by Marion, gave a performance to the Home Sweet Home Day Centre at the Estuary Club, London Road, Leigh-on-Sea on 3rd April 2019.  At one point most of the audience were up dancing; that’s a first! Available soon for weddings, christenings, funerals and Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremonies:-
