Welcome

Welcome to the Leigh Estuary u3a website.

Waiting for things to begin

Leigh Estuary u3a was formed in 2012 and since then we have grown to over 600 members being one of the larger u3a groups in Essex. We are one of over a thousand u3a member learning co-operative charities and organisations in the UK.

The Third Age Movement originally began in the UK in 1982; developing from a concept pioneered in France . Membership of our u3a is open to all in their third age, which is defined not by a particular age but by a period in life in which full time employment has ceased. Members promote the values of lifelong learning and the positive attributes of belonging to a u3a.

Our Members have formed over 50 interest groups covering a wide range of topics and activities from Art for Pleasure to Wine Appreciation. All groups are run by the members, for the members; no qualifications are sought or offered. Learning is for its own sake, with enjoyment being the prime motive, not qualifications or awards. A u3a is a learning co-operative of equals. In the words of Peter Laslett, a founder member of the u3a movement:

‘Those who teach shall also learn and those who learn shall also teach.’

The enthusiasm and expertise within our membership never ceases to amaze us and it is always a huge delight when members come forward with new ideas for another group.

Most groups meet at least once a month in and around the Leigh-on-Sea, Essex area; many making use of the Leigh Community Centre in Elm Road. A number of groups arrange outings to many varied locations and activities such as the theatre, gardens and other places of interest.

Monthly meetings for all members are held on the first Tuesday of the month at the Leigh Community Centre in Elm Road, where we are entertained by a guest speaker following which there is the opportunity to catch up with friends over tea and biscuits.
